It’s been three seasons since the New Orleans Saints last claimed an NFC South title, with the once proud franchise muddling through a 16-18 run since 2021.
With former Raiders quarterback Derrick Carr signing a 4-year, $150 million contract as a free agent and a host of defensive free agents inking deals with the club (including former Falcons defensive tackle David Onyemata and outside linebacker Kaden Elliss) there’s been a flurry of activity along the banks of the Mississippi River this offseason.
That’s probably for the best, as the Saints finished 2022 with the 16th-ranked offense by passing yards per game (217.2) and 22nd in terms of points per game (19.4), while their defense looked overmatched at times during a 7-10 campaign that saw New Orleans post a -15 point differential overall.
Whether second-year head coach Dennis Allen can get New Orleans back to the heights his predecessor (Sean Payton) did remains to be seen.
LouisianaBets.com looked at how the Saints’ win totals, and playoff and NFC South odds have changed on Louisiana sportsbooks since the start of the offseason, comparing those odds to before free agency, before the NFL Draft, and now.

Oddsmakers See Saints As Clear NFC South Betting Favorite
After two down seasons in the Crescent City, it seems that oddsmakers have fully come around to the Saints returning to the throne they held for much of the last decade.
With a preseason win total of 9.5 and -165 odds of making the playoffs for the first time since 2020, it seems that oddsmakers at BetMGM Sportsbook Louisiana are riding high on the Saints chances in 2023.
The Saints are also the clubhouse leader in terms of NFC South odds, with BetMGM Sportsbook Louisiana since divisional betting opened this offseason, with odds ranging from +115 to their current listing of +130.
Right now, New Orleans ranks ahead of other NFC South teams, with the Falcons (+240), Panthers (+375) and Buccaneers (+550) all trailing the Saints on BetMGM Sportsbook Louisiana’s odds board at the moment.
That really shouldn’t be much of a surprise, given the Saints’ four-year run of winning the division between 2017 and 2020, when New Orleans went 49-15 (.766) and outscored their opponents by 100 points or more each season.
It appears that after a disappointing last two years, the Saints are back and ready to rumble, especially given the downward trends seen in Atlanta, Charlotte and Tampa Bay.
With no Tom Brady to worry about for the Bucs’ and unproven starters in Atlanta (Desmond Ridder) and Charlotte (Bryce Young), now is the time for New Orleans to strike at regaining their NFC South swagger.
Whether Carr can regain the form that saw him make four Pro Bowls in Oakland and Las Vegas remains to be seen.
Oddsmakers seem to believe that 2023 could be the Saints’ year, however, with the Raiders castoff QB tasked with returning New Orleans to the perch that they occupied five times between 2010 and 2020.
