What To Expect From LSU After Ranking In Preseason Coaches’ Poll?
Fact Checked by Thomas Leary

Year Two of the Brian Kelly era on the Bayou appears set for historic heights across legal Louisiana sports betting, based off where Kelly’s colleagues ranked his team in their preseason poll.

That’s because Kelly and the LSU Tigers were ranked fifth nationally in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA preseason coaches poll that was released on Monday, slotting in behind the two-time defending champion Georgia Bulldogs, as well as the Michigan Wolverines, Alabama Crimson Tide and Ohio State Buckeyes.

Utilizing CBSSports.com & NCAA.com, LouisianaBets.com gathered the past 10 teams that were ranked fifth in the NCAA Football Preseason Coaches’ Poll to see what the trends are of how those teams end up performing. The 2020 season was eliminated due to the difference in games played.

How should we expect LSU to play across Louisiana betting apps after being ranked fifth in the 2023 Preseason Coaches’ Poll? Read on to find out.

Past No. 5 Teams Have Had Solid Success Of Late

The past decade has yielded a number of successful teams that started the season in LSU’s shoes. That includes 2014 national champion, Ohio State, as well as CFP participants in 2015 (Michigan State), 2017 (Clemson), 2018 and 2019 (Ohio State again).

The average No. 5 team in the preseason poll has gone 11-3 and finished 18th on aggregate in the final coaches poll, with the 2018 and 2019 Buckeyes teams that went 14-1 and 13-1 being the most successful collectives of the bunch.

Conversely, the 2021 Iowa State Cyclones were the biggest flop of the group, going from No. 5 preseason to the No. 52 spot at year’s end after posting a 7-6 record in Ames.

The 2016 Tigers team that began the year at No. 5 was similarly downtrodden, finishing the season 8-4 and No. 41 in the polls.

This year’s Tigers squad under Kelly’s leadership will look to follow in the Buckeyes’ footsteps, bringing a fifth national title to Baton Rouge in 2024, avoiding the pitfalls that ultimately befell that 2016 LSU squad.
