College athletes hold a special place in the hearts of fans, especially in a sports-crazed state like Louisiana. With most college athletes spending only a couple years plying their trade at the collegiate level, they only have a limited time to make a lasting impression on fans.
Without the benefit of having years and years to win championships and compile statistics like a player like Drew Brees had with the New Orleans Saints, college athletes need to make their mark in short order and then continue to have success at the pro level to keep their fans interested in following their careers.
Most Popular College Jerseys In Louisiana
LouisianaBets.com took a quick break from Louisiana sports betting and wanted to find out which college athletes left the most lasting impressions in the state, and we did so by seeing what the most searched college jerseys in the state are.
Utilizing Google Trends we determined the most searched college jerseys in the state of Louisiana over the 12-month period from July 2022 to July 2023 to find the most popular results. For the study, only colleges from Louisiana were considered.
Three NFL Stars Top The List
Not surprisingly, all of the top-ranked players came from LSU, with three recent football players topping the rankings. Joe Burrow, Justin Jefferson and Ja’Marr Chase top the list, all of which have been big names for Louisiana sportsbook apps bettors, followed by basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal.
Burrow won the Heisman Trophy in 2019 for the Tigers and was drafted first overall by the Cincinnati Bengals shortly after. Burrow spent two years with the program after transferring from Ohio State. He led the Tigers to the National Championship in his Heisman-winning season, leading a spectacular offense that included the two other football players on the list, Jefferson and Chase. Jefferson and Chase each eclipsed 1500 yards receiving that season with Burrow at the helm, setting them up for strong starts to their pro careers as well.
Jefferson declared for the 2020 draft in the same year as Burrow and was selected in the first round by the Minnesota Vikings. He has had an excellent start to his career, being named the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year last season. He put up 24 total touchdowns for the Tigers in two seasons with regular playing time, including 18 in their championship season.
Jefferson’s season was strong, but Chase was the one who truly stole the show, setting SEC records with 20 touchdowns and 1780 receiving yards while winning the Biletnikoff Award for the top receiver in college, and stepped up with over 200 yards and two touchdowns in the championship game. With his draft stock already at an all-time high and nothing to gain professionally by playing another season, Chase opted out of the 2020 season despite his junior status before being drafted by Cincinnati in 2021 to rejoin Burrow.
With the incredible performance that the Tigers team put on, it’s no surprise that those jerseys rank as the top college threads in Louisiana still. The only player who came close to them was the NBA legend Shaq, who played 90 dominant games over three years at the program before being drafted first overall to the NBA in the 1992 draft.
